Special Education

Minneapolis Public Schools offers a continuum of special education programs and services. In order to receive special education services, a student must first be evaluated and meet state criteria. Once qualified, an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed for the student.

Placement
When deciding on a school for your student, it is important to know in which Federal Setting your student receives their special education services. This information is located on your student’s IEP or can be explained by your student’s case manager. Minneapolis Public Schools services students in Federal Settings I through IV.

Federal Setting I and II
If your student receives their special education services in Federal Setting I or II, it means that they spend the majority of their time in a general education setting. To choose a school for your student, go through the general education placement process. The type of special education services that your student receives can be provided at any of our schools in Minneapolis. Historically, the Citywide Austism Program has served students in Federal Settings 1 through 3. PLease consult your student's case manager to discuss at an IEP meeting.

Federal Setting III and IV
If your student receives their special educations services in Federal Setting III or IV, it means that they spend the majority of their time in a specialized program. Your case manager will have information regarding the specialized program your student should attend and where programs are currently located in the district. We have also attached a sheet with the current locations of our specialized programs. Locations can change based on student and/or programming needs. If that happens, we will notify you as soon as possible. Once you have made a school choice, follow the placement process. We look forward to serving your student in their new school. If you have any questions about school choice for students receiving special education services, please contact your student’s case manager.
