English Learner Services
English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers help students learn the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. ESL classes help students reach state standards in English language proficiency. Intermediate and advanced English learners participate in grade-level content classes with licensed teachers and receive support from ESL teachers based on student needs.
Dual Language Education Programs
• The Two-way Dual Immersion Program integrates students who are native English speakers with native Spanish speakers for all or most of the school day. Students learn and use both languages to achieve high academic standards.
• Our Developmental Dual Language Program (DDL) preserves and enhances students’ skills in Spanish while they acquire higher level of English proficiency. The focus is on teaching curriculum in Spanish and then every year, more English instruction is added resulting in students who are proficient in both languages.
• The Transitional Dual Language Program (TDL) begins in kindergarten and launches students’ academic career
almost entirely in Spanish. Classroom instruction gradually moves to English so that by third grade, students are
ready for all of their instruction in English.
• Heritage Language and Culture supports and develops knowledge of the student’s home language, history and
culture. Students will study their home language, history and culture for one period per day and/or after school.
